Eye Checkups Are Necessary at Every Age, Negligence Can Cause Blindness: Dr. S.L. Bansal (article in Punjab Kesri)
Yamunanagar, July 21, 2026: In today’s world, eye-related problems are rising rapidly due to increasing screen time, irregular lifestyles, and diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. Dr. S.L. Bansal said that in such circumstances, timely eye checkups and immediate consultation with an eye specialist for any issues are essential.
He explained that symptoms such as blurred vision, burning, constant watering, redness, headaches, eye pain, reduced brightness, or difficulty seeing at night should not be dismissed as ordinary. With timely diagnosis and proper treatment, many eye conditions — including cataract, glaucoma, and retinal diseases — can be treated successfully.
He noted that many serious eye diseases develop without clear symptoms in their early stages, which is why regular eye examinations are extremely important.
Dr. Bansal said diabetic patients should get a retina checkup at least once a year, since diabetic retinopathy can be caught early and vision loss prevented. Timely checkups can also improve children’s eyesight and prevent negative effects on their academic development. People above 40 years of age should get a complete eye exam at least once a year.
People who spend long hours on mobiles, laptops, and computers should follow the 20-20-20 rule — that is, every 20 minutes, look at something roughly 20 feet away for about 20 seconds — which reduces eye strain from screens. Also, keep screen brightness balanced, blink adequately, and ensure proper lighting at the workplace.
He said that for good eye health, regularly eating leafy green vegetables, carrots, seasonal fruits, dry fruits, foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, and foods with omega-3 fatty acids is beneficial. Drinking enough water and getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep also plays an important role in keeping eyes healthy.
No eye drops or medicine should be used without medical advice. Many people buy medicine on their own when they experience eye irritation or redness, which can worsen the problem. In case of any kind of eye injury, infection, or sudden vision loss, one should contact an eye specialist immediately.
He also said that people who work around dust, smoke, and chemical substances should use protective glasses. Similarly, wearing good-quality sunglasses with UV protection while going out in the sun can protect the eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays.
Eyes are one of the most precious organs of our body. With a balanced lifestyle and timely treatment, healthy vision can be maintained for life. There is a need to raise awareness about eye health in society so that cases of blindness can be reduced, and every person can live a better life with healthy and safe vision.
